★★★★ “Most of all, Akinyele’s absolute passion for Ndegeocello’s music is endearing, and fans of her work are going to be nodding their heads in recognition…” — SPR Book Review

“Experienced musicians and passionate Ndegeocello fans will find much of interest…” — Kirkus Reviews

★★★★★ "Elliptical: The Music of Meshell Ndegeocello…its authors do a splendid job of drawing you into their work, whether you are an expert or a novice in the field of contemporary music. I loved André Akinyele’s colourful account of his own life and career as he recounts where he was in the world when each album was released and his enthusiasm and excitement for Ndegeocello’s latest works. Jon O'Bergh presents masterful music journalism to accompany this with full biographical and developmental information about the artist and her craft. Overall, this combination forms a whole world of interesting music and experiences for the reader to step into, and I for one have come away from Elliptical: The Music of Meshell Ndegeocello wanting to explore the artist herself and experience the music." — K.C. About this book

Musicians and authors André Akinyele and Jon O’Bergh explore one of the most fascinating and creative figures in contemporary music: Multi-Grammy nominated Meshell Ndegeocello. She’s an artist who defies labels and music genres, continually inspiring many with her profound vision. Ndegeocello is a rare breed in the music industry, and has weathered the ups and downs of the business by evolving musically, even against fans' expectations. But, even more, she has also evolved spiritually. She's like an older sister or close relative who you watch growing up right before your very eyes, from crazy and wild to mature and content within herself.

From Ndegeocello's first album Plantation Lullabies to her current Comet, Come To Me, Akinyele and O’Bergh capture the essence of her music from a fan's point of view, contemplating her musical journey that has been the soundtrack to our lives. Elliptical: The Music of Meshell Ndegeocello combines personal reflections and takes the reader inside her music, explaining why she and her music are so powerful and successful.

Multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer André Akinyele has recorded under the names Marcel and Ajamu Akinyele, exploring multiple music genres. He is the bandleader and bassist of the jazz/funk fusion band Gemini Soul, the vocalist and guitarist for the rock band Looking for Lester, as well as the vocalist and keyboardist for the electronic synth-pop duo Lavender Lush. He is also the co-author of the book Elliptical: The Music of Meshell Ndegeocello.
